▶ 仮定法

A if 節と主節で,表す時が異なる場合

If you had not saved me then, I would not be alive now.

B were to やshould を用いた仮定法

If I were to go to Turkey again, I would visit that restaurant.

If it should rain tomorrow, the game would〔will〕 be put off.

C if の省略

Had the team given up, the mission would never have succeeded.

Were you to do this with the death dates of the first thirty-five presidents, you would notice that two died on March 8.

D if 節に代わる表現

Without the intervention of the national government, the problem of poverty could not be solved.

But for the compass, we would have got lost in the mountains.

I took a taxi to the airport; otherwise I would have missed my flight.

An intelligent person would see something is strange about that story.

To see them together, you would think they were father and daughter.

E 仮定法を用いた慣用表現

If it were not for water, we could not survive.
(= WithoutBut for〕water, ... / Were it not for water, ...)

If it had not been for his help, our project would surely have failed.
(= WithoutBut for〕his help, ... / Had it not been for his help, ...)

If only history had been different!
