Lesson 4 の冒頭では,biodiversity という造語の定義が述べられています。このように,新しく出てきた語を説明する場合,わかりやすい言葉で言い換えて(Paraphrasing)説明したり,例示や因果関係の説明によって理解を促進したりします。言い換えを表す語句(動詞mean を使った表現 や in other words など)にも注意しながら,次の問題に取り組みましょう。
Read the passage below and answer the following questions.
When you buy fish or other marine products in Japan, you will often see a blue label on the package. These labels are made by an organization called the “Marine Stewardship Council.” They show that the product has been caught under a policy of sustainable fishing.
To “sustain” supplies of fish means to ①( maintain ; lose ) a sufficient supply so that fishing can continue into the future. The reason for this is that, in the past, there seemed to be an endless supply of fish.
