Target: Inference

スポーツの試合状況などを説明する場合，実際に表現されていなくても，前後の文などから，その場の状況や人物の感情などを推測（Infer）できることがあります。「何となく」ではなく，根拠となる部分を明確にしながら読み進めましょう。

Read the passage below and answer the following questions.

Jack: So, what did you think of the match?

Susan: Well, I must say I was disappointed with Liverpool’s performance. I think Chelsea are the weaker team, but they played well yesterday.

Jack: After Chelsea’s first early goal, Liverpool seemed to give up.

Susan: Maybe you’re right. They played better in the second half, but still it wasn’t enough to win.

Jack: You’re kidding! They didn’t even score. In the end it was two to nothing!

Susan: Maybe Liverpool need to change some of their players before the next match. It was a pity Edward missed that goal. I think that broke his concentration. Everyone wanted him to score so much.

Jack: Maybe the pressure was too much for him to handle.... Maybe it was the weather!

Susan: I was glad to be watching the game on TV and not at the stadium, trying to keep warm!

Jack: They play again in two weeks. Which team do you think will win the next game?
