Target: Sequencing in Time Order

Lesson 1 の本文では，一連の出来事が時系列（Time Order）に沿って述べられています。歴史的な出来事や伝記，記憶をたどって述べる場合などに，このパターンが用いられることがあります。パラグラフの最初と最後の部分に注目し，ʻ時間的順序ʼ を表す語句に注意して，次の問題に取り組みましょう。

Read the passage below and answer the following questions.

The Thames runs through London from west to east. 　London’s famous landmarks are found on the north bank of the river, but from the beginning of the city’s history, the south bank has had a somewhat different character.

　①　 Many people went there to relax.

　②　 The character of the area changed.

　③　 Even in the second half of the twentieth century, industrial buildings were being built on the south bank including, in the 1950s, a power station which burned oil to make electricity.

Change finally came again in the second half of the twentieth century. The factories were cleared away. In 1981 the power station closed. It opened again in 2000 as a new art gallery. A new bridge was built. 　④
