A 直接話法と間接話法

❶ Paul said to me, “Iʼm in the library now.”（直接話法）
⇒ Paul told me that he was in the library then.（間接話法）

❶ 「ポールは私に『僕は今図書館にいる』と言いました。」
⇒ 「ポールは私に，自分はその時図書館にいると言いました。」

B 話法の転換：伝達する内容が平叙文の場合

❷ Makiko said to me, “I will go to the rock concert tomorrow.”
⇒ Makiko told me that she would go to the rock concert the next day.

❷ 「マキコは私に『明日ロックコンサートに行くつもりよ』と言いました。」
⇒ 「マキコは私に，次の日はロックコンサートに行くつもりだと言いました。」

❸ Mr. White said, “I bought this book yesterday.”
⇒ Mr. White said that he had bought that book the day before.

❸ 「ホワイト氏は『私は昨日この本を買いました』と言いました。」
⇒ 「ホワイト氏は，前日にその本を買ったと言いました。」

❹ The soldier said to Irena, “You should be careful.”
⇒ The soldier told Irena that she should be careful.（p.35 ℓ.12）

❹ 「兵士はイレーナに『気をつけるんだぞ』と言いました。」
⇒ 「兵士はイレーナに，気をつけるようにと言いました。」

C 話法の転換：伝達する内容が疑問文の場合

❺ Kazuo said to me, “Will you be at home tomorrow afternoon?”
⇒ Kazuo asked me if〔whether〕 I would be at home the following afternoon.

❺ 「カズオは私に『明日の午後は家にいる？』と言いました。」
⇒ 「カズオは私に，私が次の日の午後は家にいるかどうかたずねました。」

❻ Mr. White said to me, “Where does your brother live?”
⇒ Mr. White asked me where my brother lived.

❻ 「ホワイト氏は私に『あなたのお兄〔弟〕さんはどちらに住んでいるのですか』と言いました。」
⇒ 「ホワイト氏は私に，私の兄〔弟〕がどこに住んでいるかたずねました。」

D 話法の転換：伝達する内容が命令文／Let’s ... の場合

❼ Mr. Brown said to us, “Take these chairs to the art room.”
⇒ Mr. Brown told us to take those chairs to the art room.

❼ 「ブラウン先生は私たちに『これらのいすを美術室に持っていきなさい』と言いました。」
⇒ 「ブラウン先生は私たちに，それらのいすを美術室に持っていくように言いました。」

❽ Kate said to her brother, “Donʼt be noisy.”
⇒ Kate told her brother not to be noisy.

❽ 「ケイトは兄〔弟〕に『うるさくしないで』と言いました。」
⇒ 「ケイトは兄〔弟〕にうるさくしないように言いました。」

❾ Jane said to me, “Letʼs go cycling next Sunday.”
⇒ Jane suggested to me that we (should) go cycling the following Sunday.

❾ 「ジェーンは私に『来週の日曜日にサイクリングに行こう』と言いました。」
⇒ 「ジェーンは私に，（私たちは）次の日曜日にサイクリングに行ってはどうかと提案しました。」

❿ Ms. Yamamoto said to the boys, “Please listen to me.”
⇒ Ms. Yamamoto asked the boys to listen to her.

❿ 「山本さんは少年たちに『私の話を聞いてください』と言いました。」
⇒ 「山本さんは少年たちに，自分の話を聞いてくれるように頼みました。」

⓫ Andy said to Sarah, “Will you lend me some money?”
⇒ Andy asked Sarah to lend him some money.

⓫ 「アンディーはサラに『お金をいくらか貸してくれない？』と言いました。」
⇒ 「アンディーはサラにお金をいくらか貸してくれるように頼みました。」

E 話法の転換：その他

⓬ Mary said, “What a beautiful bird this is!”
⇒ Mary exclaimed what a beautiful bird that was.

⓬ 「メアリーは『これはなんて美しい鳥なの！』と言いました。」
⇒ 「メアリーは，それはなんて美しい鳥だろうと叫びました。」

⓭ Ken said to me, “I will call you when I arrive at the station.”
⇒ Ken told me that he would call me when he arrived at the station.

⓭ 「ケンは私に『駅に着いたら電話するよ』と言いました。」
⇒ 「ケンは私に，駅に着いたら電話すると言いました。」

⓮ Mike said, “Iʼm busy now, but I will go to see a movie on Sunday.”
⇒ Mike said (that) he was busy then, but that he would go to see a movie the following Sunday.

⓮ 「マイクは『僕は今忙しいけれど，日曜日は映画に行くつもりだよ』と言いました。」
⇒ 「マイクは，彼はその時は忙しかったけれど，次の日曜日は映画に行くつもりだと言いました。」
