All electric circuits are either in series or in parallel. A series circuit is very simple. Each element follows the next in a direct series. There is only one path for electrons to flow through in a series circuit. The diagram shows how a series circuit works. A parallel circuit is one where electrons may flow in two or more paths. This diagram shows a basic parallel circuit. The battery supplies electricity to all three elements. Electrons may travel through any one of them. Series and parallel circuits have different practical uses. This string of lights is an example of a series circuit. In a series circuit, if one of the lights burns out, it causes an open circuit. Electrons will stop flowing because they can only flow through a closed circuit. Therefore the other lights in the circuit will go out as well. In a parallel circuit, things are different. Here, if a light burns out, it will also cause an open circuit. But since electrons have alternative paths to flow through the circuit, they take those paths instead. So the only light to go dark would be the one that burns out.
