Some of the earliest forms of art are the drawings, paintings, and carvings on stone that ancient peoples made throughout the world. Scientists think that some designs etched into stones found in the Blombos Caves in South Africa are some 70,000 years old. Many different images appear in rock art, but one of the most common is a simple handprint. Handprints appear on cave walls in Argentina, Australia, Borneo, and North America. Other images help people today understand what life was like for the people who made the art centuries ago. These images show the animals that people may have hunted, the tools they used, and the activities of their daily lives. Sometimes people left designs or symbols that may have been important in their religion. Like the handprints, many of the images are similar, despite the fact that they were created by people in completely different parts of the world.
