Voting rights for women

Women could not participate in elections for much of human history. In the 1800s women began fighting for the right to vote. In 1893 New Zealand became the first country to allow women to vote. Australia followed suit in 1902. However, none of the native Australian population, men or women, were allowed to vote until much later. In 1906 women in Finland were given the right to vote, followed by Norway in 1913 and Denmark in 1915. In 1917 the Russian Revolution brought women’s voting rights to that country. By the end of World War I, in 1918, most women in the United Kingdom, Germany, and Canada were able to vote as well. After decades of struggle, most U.S. women gained the right to vote in 1920. However, as in Australia and Canada before it, the native population of the United States was not allowed to vote until years later. The first South American country to give women voting rights was Ecuador, in 1929. The following year white South African women could vote. Black South Africans were not allowed to vote until 1994. In the late 1940s and into the 1950s, China, India, Pakistan, and most Latin American countries gave women the right to vote. By the end of the 1960s, women across most of Africa could participate in elections. In the 1970s Switzerland, Portugal, Spain, and Moldova gave women voting rights. In 1984 Liechtenstein became the last European country to give women the right to vote. Bahrain, Qatar, and Kuwait gave women the right to vote in the early 2000s. In 2015, women in Saudi Arabia were allowed to vote in local elections for the first time.
